A key component of this effort will be to chart a research agenda that frames questions central to security policymaking, and then to recruit and encourage scholars to carry out this agenda through their work. By incorporating policymakers into the process of defining research questions, we aim to ensure that new academic research serves the nation’s needs.
The Tobin Project will bring together scholars, elected officials, and other leaders from the policy community to:
- Identify the new research questions prompted by the challenges of the new era in national security policymaking;
- Inspire scholars to address these research questions and recruit others to undertake this new work;
- Connect scholars from across disciplines who are committed to collaboratively answering these questions;
- Link scholars to the policymakers most in need of their research;
- Connect the work of university-based scholars with think tank leaders and those within government so that research efforts can build on one another; and
- Reconvene each year to evaluate progress, share new findings and discuss new research questions as they arise.
